D'Arby cambió legalmente su nombre por el de Sananda Maitreya a finales de los 90, tras una crisis personal y espiritual. Durante los años ochenta Terence Trent D?Arby fue soldado de EE.UU. Trasladado a Alemania, comienza a sumergirse en el mundo de la música creando una banda de funk que respondía al nombre de Touch. Tras dejar la armada se traslada a Londres donde firma su primer contrato con la casa discográfica CBS. El primer single que sale a la calle de D?Arby?s es ?If You Let Me Stay? que, como un cohete, ascendió a los Top Ten de las listas. Este single se incluía en el álbum Introducing the Hardline According to Terence. El disco también escaló las listas hasta llegar a la cima, y manteniéndose cerca de un año entre los más vendidos. Una de sus canciones más funkys ?Wishing Well? alcanza el número uno. La balada ?Sign Your Name? se coloca entre los cinco más vendidos y le reporta un total de dos millones copias colocadas.
